Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: September 5, 2023

Date in the Ordine: Tuesday of the 22nd Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture Text: Luke 4:31-37

Jesus went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath, and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority. In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are–the Holy One of God!" Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm. They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out." And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel for today recounts Jesus’ activity after leaving Nazareth where he was rejected. In Capernaum, Jesus was met with acceptance and astonishment at his authority even over demons. Today’s text stands in sharp contrast to the text just prior to it; it reminds us of the role faith plays in our own lives.

How does this pertain to us today?

The text resonates with us today because it reveals the power and authority of Jesus Christ. It invites us to lay down our doubts and accept Him.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Where am I in my relationship with Jesus Christ? Do I recognize His power and authority? Do I see His love for me in His actions and words? Do I invite Him to come and stay?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Savior. We come to You acknowledging your power and presence in our world and our lives and beg of You to remain with us, to remain in us, as we seek to remain in You. Strengthen us through the power of your Spirit for our journey home. Amen.
