Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: October 6, 2024

Date: 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Scripture Text:  Genesis 2:18-24

The LORD God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him." So, the LORD God formed out of the ground various wild animals and various birds of the air, and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them; whatever the man called each of them would be its name. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of the air, and all wild animals; but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So, the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man, and while he was asleep, he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib that he had taken from the man. When he brought her to the man, the man said:

"This one, at last, is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh;

this one shall be called 'woman, '

for out of 'her man’ this one has been taken. '

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading is from the 2nd chapter of Genesis and relates the creation of Adam and Eve in the Garden. It stresses the LORD’s desire for “relationship” with and for humanity.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I recognize the LORD’s immanence to me, the LORD powerfully and creatively present to me? Do I understand the LORD’s desire for me to have and to build good and strong relationships with the LORD and with others? Do I realize that the LORD created humanity to be relational – to have a loving relationship with our creator and with one another?

Praying:

LORD, You formed us, You created our world and each of us. Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, You wove within us the need for and desire for relationship with You, with one another, and with all of creation. Stir your transformative love within us that we may respect the creation that surrounds us and work to preserve it. Tenderize our minds and hearts so that we might love our sisters and brothers regardless of ethnicity or countries of origin. Grant that we may turn to You with all our mind, our heart, our strength in love this day and all days. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
