Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: October 2, 2024

Date: Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

Scripture Text:  Matthew 18:1-5, 10

The disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?" He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel text for today recounts Jesus’ response to the disciple’s question concerning who is the greatest in the kingdom. Jesus’ response no doubt surprised the disciples as it does many today because the “greatest” isn’t the most powerful but rather the humblest. Jesus goes on to assure the disciples of the existence of angels, guardian angels.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I recognize the LORD’s power and presence at work in my life or do I dismiss it? Do I recognize my need for the LORD?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, always and everywhere You are and your power and presence fill our world. You are love itself and we lift our voices in praise for all You are and thanksgiving for all that is because of You and your transformative and creative love. Seize our minds and hearts so that we might live as the daughters and sons You created us to be.  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
