Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: May 15, 2023

Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. "I have told you this so that you may not fall away. They will expel you from the synagogues; in fact, the hour is coming when everyone who kills you will think he is offering worship to God. They will do this because they have not known either the Father or me. I have told you this so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you."

Breaking the text open:

The gospel for today, Monday of the 6th Week of Easter, continues our reading of Jesus’ final discourse to the disciples before his arrest and crucifixion. Today’s text focuses on Jesus’ promise of the Spirit, our Advocate, sent by both the Father and the Son. Jesus’ promise acknowledges that “the way” of discipleship will have hardships, but the Spirit is being sent to us to lead us and to grace us so that we might continue Christ’s salvific mission on earth.

Meditating on the text:

Do I prayerfully seek the help of the Spirit? Do I prayerfully open myself to the Spirit’s guidance and grace?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father and Beloved Savior and Son, Jesus Christ, we pray that we might be open to the Spirit sent by You to help us, to advocate for us, to guide us and grace us. Grant that we may be open to the Spirit’s guidance and cooperate with the Spirit’s graces as seek to become the ones You created us to be and the disciples You call us to be. Amen.
