Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: March 13, 2025

Dr. Kate Wiskus

Thursday of the 1st Week of Lent

Scripture Text: Matthew 7:7-12

Jesus said to his disciples:

"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asked for a loaf of bread, or a snake when he asked for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.

"Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the law and the prophets."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel reading for today is drawn from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount as recounted in the Gospel of Matthew. In today’s text, Jesus specifically speaks of the power of prayer and the LORD’s response to our prayer. It ends with the golden rule which both the law and the prophets demand of us in our relationship with one another.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How trusting am I of the LORD? Does my prayer reflect that? How loving am I of others? Does my life reflect that?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved Son as our brother, taking on our human nature, living among us and revealing to us your great and saving love for us. Send your Spirit to help us better embrace His teachings and live as He calls us to live as His disciples. Open our minds and hearts to Him, to His love for us, and to His selfless sacrifice upon the cross of Calvary for our lives, for our salvation, for love of You and love of us. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
