Scripture Text: Mark 10:13-16
People were bringing children to Jesus that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, "Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it." Then he embraced the children and blessed them, placing his hands on them.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel reading recounts for us Jesus’ insistence that the Kingdom of God belongs to the humble, to the vulnerable who are totally dependent upon the LORD.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I acknowledge and give thanks to the LORD for His provision for me and my life? Do I depend upon the LORD as I should? Do I seek to obey the LORD as a child would obey a parent?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we are your children. You sent your only-begotten Son to live among us as our brother and to reveal You and your great love for us. Send your Spirit to illuminate our minds and hearts so that we might humbly confess our dependence upon You and your love. Grant that we may come to You as the children did to Jesus, recognizing your love and your desire that we have life and have it in abundance. We ask this in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
