Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: June 21, 2024

Date: Friday of the 11th Week in Ordinary Time/Memorial of St. Aloysius Gonzaga

Scripture Text:  Matthew 6:19-23

Jesus said to his disciples:

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy, and thieves break in and steal. But store up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroys, nor thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.

"The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light;but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel reading for today continues our reading from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Today, Jesus’ message teaches us to focus on what is everlasting rather than temporary. A healthy view of material things will better lead us to a healthy spiritual view and life.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

What do I truly treasure? When I look about me, how do I view others and things?

Praying:

LORD, We turn to You desiring that our lives will bring You glory and praise and that we will grow into the ones You created us to be. Help us to keep our sight focused on what is good and lasting, You and your grace and your kingdom. You alone can fill our lives with truth and meaning. Fill us with your light, LORD.
