Scripture Text: Hebrews 2:14-18

Since the children share in blood and Flesh, Jesus likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the Devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. Surely, he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today from Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews reminds us of Jesus’ role as Savior and of His own suffering as the wellspring of His mercy and compassion.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I turn to Christ as my Savior knowing He understands my struggles and suffering?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only, begotten Son to dwell among us because of your desire for our life and our salvation. He came to us to reveal not only your great love for us but also His. It was your will that through His life, death, and resurrection that He would vanquish sin and death so that we might have life in abundance with You. Send your Spirit to stir within us, to help us open ourselves more fully to your beloved Son’s salvation won for us in His selfless sacrifice upon the cross of Calvary. Grant that we may draw closer in our love. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever, Amen.
