Scripture Text: Hebrews 13:15-17, 20-21

Brothers and sisters:

Through Jesus, let us continually offer God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind.

Obey your leaders and defer to them, for they keep watch over you and will have to give an account, that they may fulfill their task with joy and not with sorrow, for that would be of no advantage to you.

May the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great shepherd of the sheep by the Blood of the eternal covenant, furnish you with all that is good, that you may do his will. May he carry out in you what is pleasing to him through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading is the concluding statement in the Book of Hebrews. It calls upon us to be people of praise who seek to do good and to share our gifts. It also calls us to obey our leaders who answer to the LORD. Finally, it begs the LORD to furnish us with all that is good so that we might do His will through Jesus Christ.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I praise the LORD daily? Do I recognize that doing the will of the LORD is a form of praise?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, we praise You for all You are and give thanks to You for all that is and for all that You give to us, most especially our lives and your transformative and redemptive love. Stir within us as only You can the fire of your love that we might be fueled for our journey in You, with You, and through You. Grant that have the wisdom and will to do good and to share what You have given to each of us with one another for your glory. We pray for your peace. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
