Scripture Text: Hebrews 13:1-8

Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels. Be mindful of prisoners as if sharing their imprisonment, and of the ill-treated as of yourselves, for you also are in the body. Let marriage be honored among all and the marriage bed be kept undefiled, for God will judge the immoral and adulterers. Let your life be free from love of money but be content with what you have, for he has said, I will never forsake you or abandon you. Thus we may say with confidence:

The Lord is my helper,

and I will not be afraid.

What can anyone do to me?

Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The first reading for today from the Book of Hebrews reminds us of our Christian call to righteousness, to love well our sisters and brothers and to rely upon the LORD who “is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How mindful am I of others and their needs? How reliant am I on the LORD? Do I truly trust in the LORD?

Praying:

LORD, Father of all, we turn to You with praise and thanksgiving. We bring our needs to You knowing that You are aware of them before we bring them. You know our difficulties and challenges. You know those areas of our lives where we need to do better. As we seek to follow as disciples of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, we ask that You send your Spirit to strengthen our resolve and our cooperation with grace. Grant that we may seek to follow Christ’s command and love one another as He has loved us. We ask this in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
