Date: Feast of St. John the Apostle
Scripture Text: 1 John 1:1-4
Beloved:
What was from the beginning,
what we have heard,
what we have seen with our eyes,
what we looked upon
and touched with our hands
concerns the Word of life —
for the life was made visible;
we have seen it and testify to it
and proclaim to you the eternal life
that was with the Father and was made visible to us—
what we have seen and heard
we proclaim now to you,
so that you too may have fellowship with us;
for our fellowship is with the Father
and with his Son, Jesus Christ.
We are writing this so that our joy may be complete.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The first reading of today presents the opening of the 1st Letter of John in which John presents powerful witness of Jesus Christ to his readers so that we, too, might “have fellowship” with the Father Almighty, with Jesus Christ, and with other believers.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Will I open my heart and mind to Christ, invite Him in?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, during this most holy season of Christmas as we continue to celebrate the gift of your beloved Son as our brother and savior, send your Spirit to grace us with openness and awe so that we might more fully open ourselves to Christ more fully, more deeply, so that He may remain with us. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
